About The Area

Kelvedon is a thriving and picturesque village of immense character with a population of approx 5,000.

The river Blackwater which runs through the centre is spanned by Packhorse Bridge (built around 1750) dividing Kelvedon from the adjoining village of Feering.

The village became an essential part of the route from Norfolk and Suffolk to London, making Kelvedon an important staging post along the much used road, as can be seen from the numerous inns and hostelries which served the area.

Kelvedon’s popularity grew during Victorian times when a rail link to London was built. In the late 19th century, Kings Seeds put Kelvedon firmly on the map as a pioneering centre for seed growing and for the production of vegetable and flower seeds, notably sweet peas. The A12 bypass was built in the 1960’s which diverted the ever-increasing volume of traffic, thereby relieving the pressure on Kelvedon High Street.

Kelvedon is ideally placed for links to the East of England:

  • Excellent road links with the A12 Norwich to London
  • 24.7 miles from London Stansted International Airport
  • 51.6 miles to central London
  • 50 minutes from Kelvedon mainline railway station to London Liverpool Street
  • 9.5 miles from Chelmsford town centre
  • 10.2 miles from the Historic town of Colchester
  • 17.5 miles from the unspoilt coastal Seaside town of Frinton-on -Sea
  • 67.3 miles from the Historic market town of Norwich
  • 27.6 miles from Junction 28 of the M25

Excellent schooling is available for all ages in and around Kelvedon by both St Marys Church of England Primary School and Feering Church of England (Controlled) Primary School with Honywood Community Science School in nearby Coggeshall. Kelvedon is fortunate to benefit from a wide range of local shops and services, from supermarkets to upmarket delicatessens, old-fashioned independent fishmongers and butchers offering local produce and advice. In addition, there is a good selection of pubs/restaurants to choose to suit a wide range of tastes. Freeport Designer shopping village Braintree is located just 15 minutes drive away offering not only designer clothing but also a multiplex cinema, public swimming pool, and a selection of restaurants.
